A strategy to transform agency-wide digital capabilities.

A strategy to transform agency-wide digital capabilities.

Further to the work done to develop their Data Strategy, GWI was engaged by an environmental agency to design a Digital Strategy and Roadmap to enhance agency-wide digital capabilities.

The agency’s diverse workforce engages in complex activities, from field research and environmental monitoring to policy development and public engagement. These diverse activities depend on effective digital tools and infrastructure to support collaboration, communication, and decision-making.

The context

The organisation identified several challenges and pain points as a result of legacy systems and paper-based processes, which were hindering efficiency and collaboration. They recognised the opportunity to enhance their existing digital landscape to overcome these challenges and improve capabilities to contribute to achieving their mission.

The method

GWI identified a number of challenges to overcome, including:

  • Legacy systems and outdated software hindered efficiency and collaboration across the department, creating difficulties in information sharing and decision-making
  • Field staff rely on paper-based processes and intermittent connectivity, leading to delays in data collection and access to important resources
  • Customers experience fragmented across different channels, resulting in confusion and delayed service delivery.

To address these challenges, GWI worked with the organisation to develop a Digital Strategy aimed at modernising its technology landscape and enhancing its digital capabilities. This process involved:

  • Thorough analysis of existing digital tools, workflows, and user experiences across the department
  • Consultation with representatives across the organisation to understand their challenges and aspirations for the use of digital technologies
  • Review of existing corporate and divisional strategic documentation to develop an integrated, agency-wide approach
  • Benchmarking against best practices in digital technology adoption across public sector organisation, ensuring a tailored and relevant approach.

The impact

The Digital Strategy outlines a clear path forward, positioning digital innovation as the key to overcoming these challenges and achieving agency-wide strategic objectives. Through prioritising  five key areas, the Digital Strategy GWI developed promotes system integration, operational efficiency, and enables seamless information sharing across platforms.

The strategy GWI designed informs a shared understanding of the key priorities, work plan, and investments required to deliver modern digital solutions over five years. Through leveraging IT systems and assets, it supports the organisation in evidence-based decision making and empower staff to deliver better services to the environment and community.

Ultimately, the Digital Strategy aims to transform the department’s digital landscape, increasing agility, responsiveness, and capacity for innovation.
